Emiko was born in southern Japan in a beautiful, rural area surrounded by scenic mountains.  Her love of drawing and art began at an early age, and she continues to paints today at the young age of 92.  During the Korean War, Emiko met and married stationed soldier Ralph Goodman. They moved to Elkin in the 1950's.  Here, she continued to paint and quickly became a well-loved community member.  Then-Superintendent Mr. Carpenter asked Mrs. Goodman if she would teach art at Elkin High School.  Happily accepting the position, she taught there for 17 years.  Many of her students have lovely memories of her art classes, inspiring some to further their art careers.  She instructed her student's to pause, and observe the subjects of their work opening their eyes to the beauty of the world surrounding them. These lessons remain instilled in her students to this day.
