MENTOR/APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM
The Yadkin Valley
Craft Guild, centered in Elkin, NC, is seeking master artisans
to mentor apprentices in the areas of fiber, metals/jewelry
(including precious metal jewelry), photography (including
digital), wood (including instrument-making) and clay. The
Guild serves Surry County, as well as 17 neighboring counties in
North Carolina and southwest Virginia. The Mentor/Apprentice
Program, a grassroots economic development effort funded by the
Golden LEAF Foundation, provides training equipment and
supplies.
In their own studios,
mentors instruct apprentices in the fine points of their crafts,
while benefiting from the apprentices’ help in targeted tasks
for a period of 12 months. A shadowing period of six weeks at
the outset enables the participants to determine if the
relationship is workable. Mentors receive a month-long display
in our gallery window at 122 West Main Street in Elkin, a sales
commission charge of only 10% on their products, and a
complementary membership in the Guild.
If you are a master
craftsperson in one of the media mentioned above consider
becoming a mentor and help train a new generation of artisan
entrepreneurs in our 18-county area. If you would like to
learn more about our Mentor/Apprentice Program, please give Mary
Mascenik, the project coordinator, a call at 336-414-7749 or
email her at
